Published on October 31, 2008 by a person or group writing under the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto, the currency was introduced to an unsuspecting world in a nine-page paper called "Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System". The first 50 bitcoins were born at 1815 GMT on January 3, 2009.
